Exploring the Different Types of Garage Sizes

Raleigh garage door repairRaleigh Garage Door Repair: Exploring Garage Types

Welcome back! In our last post, our Raleigh garage door repair experts began discussing the different types of garage classifications. Garages have a multitude of options for homeowners looking to add one onto their current or new home. There are different types of materials garages can be built with. In addition, they can also come in a variety of shapes and sizes, as well as with or without  garage doors.
Among the different materials and styles of garages, there are also three different types of garage categories:

  • Single
  • Double
  • Tandem

Today, we are going to go over each type and how they’re different. To take a look back at our previous posts, before moving on, visit them here:

Single Garage | Raleigh Garage Door Repair
As the simplest type of garage, single garages are usually a space that accommodates one average sized car. They’re rarely big enough for a truck or large SUV. There is usually enough space for the driver and other passengers to enter and exit easily, as well as fully open all doors of the car.
Double Garage
Twice the width of a single garage, double garages allow two cars to be parked side by side comfortably. In addition, there’s enough space for all passengers to open doors, enter and exit comfortably.
Tandem Garage
A tandem garage type is not as common as a single or double type. Mainly due to the inconvenience of not being able to move both cars at once, the tandem style garage isn’t always popular. A tandem garage offers parking for two cars, end to end, rather than side by side. In addition, tandem garages usually offer only one garage door.
While the limitation of only being able to move one car at a time is inconvenient, tandem style garages can work as long as there’s a little planning involved, before moving the vehicles.

Different Types of Garages

raleigh garage door repairAre you interested in building a garage? As Raleigh garage door repair experts, we talk a lot about existing garages and doors. We seldom mention anything about those homeowners that own older homes. Older homes don’t always have a garage. If they do, they’ve been constructed within the last 20 years or so. If you are interested in building a garage, we’ve decided to take some time to talk about the several different types of garages you can build. Learning about the different types of garage structures can hopefully help you decide which type is best for you.
Today, our Raleigh garage door repair experts will focus on the most typical and traditional garage type; a stick built garage. These garages are more like an extension of your home and can be a great addition that adds value to your home, should you ever sell it.

Stick Built Garage | Raleigh Garage Door Repair

When you think of the word garage, a stick built garage is most likely what comes to mind. These types of garages are built just like a typical home is. There’s a foundation, a frame, walls and a door that leads into the home. In addition, of course, there are Raleigh garage doors, as well.
These traditional type garages are sturdy, attractive and great for storage space. Unfortunately, there can be an issue with stick built garages and size. Not everyone has room to build one. Even further, there might not be a great location to add this type of garage to the home.
Considering that a stick built garage is an actual home addition that qualifies as a structure of its own, they’re quite expensive. A stick built garage will, however, add value to your home and offer extra space and protection for your vehicles and home.
If you do decide to build a stick built garage, your next decision will be whether or not it should be an attached garage. Attached garages are convenient, as you won’t have to go outside the home to get into your car during winter; but they’re much less cost efficient and make homeowners insurance go up, as well. Fire can spread easily through the stick built garage, into the home, which accounts for the higher insurance rate.
A detached garage offers many of the same benefits of an attached one, but can be just as costly, as city or county building codes might enforce regulations. These codes might cause you to place the garage away from your home. That can lead to grading costs and more.
No matter which type of stick built garage, detached or not, you’re sure to enjoy the extra space and vehicle protection. In our next post, we will discuss a totally different, yet popular type of garage that you might be more interested in. Be sure to visit back with Hanson Overhead, Raleigh garage door repair, soon!

Get Ready for Fall, Continued!

Welcome back! In our last post, we talked about getting your garage ready for fall and offered a few tips on how to do so! Today, our Raleigh garage door repair tech will offer a few more tips, as well!

Raleigh Garage Door Repair: Get Ready for Fall!

Our previous post mentioned a few tips on how to get your garage door ready for fall. Below, you’ll find a recap of the tips. This review will hopefully help you remember to get your garage doors serviced before fall and winter hit, so that you’ll be assured they’re ready for colder weather!

  • Tighten door – This takes care of any loose hardware which could result in poor door operation and eventual damage to the door and opener.
  • Lubricate door – Our Raleigh garage door repair expert will lubricate all moving door parts with a silicone-based spray lubricant to ensure that your door runs smoothly.
  • Inspect bottom rubber – To make sure the rubber seal on the bottom of your door is not torn or cracked
  • Check condition of parts – A garage door repair tech will note worn or broken parts and recommend repairs.
  • Adjust track – To ensure that your Raleigh garage door opens and closes smoothly
  • Adjust springs – To make sure that the spring is not wound too tight or hanging loose

While it’s important to make sure your doors are in great shape, it’s also a great idea to make sure your garage is in good shape, in general! Follow the tips below and get ready for fall!
Get ready for winter. Yes, we’ve been talking about getting ready for fall, but it’s important to get ready for winter before fall, as well. Living in the south, we don’t always have warning before terribly cold and snowy weather. It can hit in late fall, early winter, and come and go during both seasons. Service winter weather equipment now, to save time and be prepared for our unpredictable climate. Also, if you have a generator, make sure it’s serviced and ready to be used, even if you seldom end up using it during fall and winter. You just never know what might happen!
Get summer equipment and vehicles serviced and stored away. Sharpen lawnmower blades, change the oil in all lawn equipment, and make sure repairs are done. Also, storing ATVs and other seasonal vehicles now, after they’ve been serviced, ensures that they’ll be ready to go come spring!

Choosing a New Garage Door

Raleigh Garage Door Repair: How to Choose a New Garage Door!

When choosing a specific material for your next garage door purchase, it’s important to consider how often the door is going to perform and how long you’d like it to last. In addition, consider the weather. Certain materials don’t fare as well in hot temps or rainy areas. This also goes into whether or not you choose to get an insulated door. Some door materials aren’t as insulated as others. If you use your garage as a workshop or have a media room in it, it’s important to consider insulation.
Steel Doors | Raleigh Garage Door Repair
These garage doors are very strong. Much stronger than aluminum, fiberglass or wood. While they’re not as visually appealing as the latter materials, there are some great embossed metal garage doors that mimic the look of wood-grain. There are also durable coatings that can be used to make your steel door look like wood, as well. The coatings are durable and need much less maintenance than actual wood.
In choosing a steel garage door, you’re ensuring that you’ve purchased a door that will withstand most types of weather. They won’t fall apart, warp, or crack. Even more, steel garage doors are made of galvanized steel that is then wrapped in vinyl or has a polyester finish that is baked-on. Thanks to these coverings, the doors won’t rust.
As we mentioned above, insulation is often a key factor when purchasing new garage doors. Most quality steel garage doors have insulated cores. The insulation ensures a warm garage in the winter and a cool garage in the summer. The insulation also helps to keep the door quiet, light and easy to operate!
The downside: Steel doors dent and the color can sometimes fade.
We hope you’ve enjoyed learning about the most durable of garage door materials! If you have any questions, feel free to contact us! For more information on other types of garage door material, be sure to visit back with our Raleigh garage door repair experts, soon!

Garage Door Repair Tips for Fall!

Raleigh Garage Door Repair Tips for Fall!

As seasons change, and the temperature starts to rise or fall, it can bring garage door issues. These climate changes cause metal to contract and expand. When this happens, weak points of your garage door will begin to break. In our last post, we talked about ways to get your garage doors ready for fall and today, our Raleigh garage door repair experts have a few more tips to follow!
Look for frayed or broken cables – If you have cables on your garage door that look a little worn and frayed, it is best to get them replaced before the cooler fall weather sets in.
Look for sagging or broken springs – It is very common for our Raleigh garage doors to snap a spring during season changes; especially during fall. Springs tend to wear evenly, in most cases, so if one has broken, the other is sure to break soon. Hanson Overhead’s Raleigh garage door repair experts always recommend changing out both springs at the same time. It is safer and saves money in the long run.
Cold weather opener woes – The same colder weather that snaps cables and springs on our Raleigh garage doors also causes problems for garage door openers. Look for worn out or stripped gears in your opener. Also, expect to have some difficulties with your screw drive opener. The screw drive opener has a thick lubricant around the screw assembly which, in cold weather, tends to thicken and cause the opener to function improperly, or sometimes not function at all. Be sure to get your garage door opener checked out by a professional as soon as it starts performing badly.
For more tips on how to get your garage doors ready for fall, visit back with our Raleigh garage door experts soon! To schedule a maintenance check to ensure that your garage doors are in great shape and ready for fall, contact Hanson Overhead of Raleigh!
