Garage Cleaning Guide for Spring Cleaning!

Raleigh Garage Door Repair: Garage Cleaning Guide Can Help Your Door Stay Safe!

The garage is probably the hardest room of your home to keep neat and clutter-free. For starters, there’s a good chance that your garage is more than just a place to store your car. It’s also the place where you store your tools, old toys and other items. It’s easy to accumulate a great deal of “stuff” in your garage, sometimes to the point that your car will no longer fit!
Raleigh Garage Door Repair | Organize Your Garage!
Organizing your garage is a great springtime project. It will create the necessary room to store all of the tools and gadgets that your summer activities and projects will require. Getting your garage in shape for the summer will probably take up at least one weekend day of your time, hopefully not more! Cooperation from your family members will be a big help so get them involved! Also, it’s important to have a plan of action before you start.
Most people don’t even think of creating a plan for cleaning their garage. Without a guide that helps you and inspires you, you’ll never get the garage as clean and organized as you’d like. Below, you’ll find a few tips from our Raleigh garage door repair specialists that should help you get your garage cleaned and organized before the summer season hits!
Clear Out the Clutter
Step One: Tackle the piles of “stuff” that have accumulated over the winter. Weather permitting, haul everything outside where you’ll have room to work. Your alternative is to work one area of your garage at a time. Make sure you have plenty of cardboard boxes, plastic storage containers, trash bags and an empty trash bin.
Start sorting your items one by one, placing each item in the appropriate cardboard box. If some items are too large to fit in a box, place them in separate piles. Your box and pile categories should be identified as follows:
Keep in garage. This category is for items that you definitely want to keep in the garage. Make sure the items are needed and fit well in the garage without blocking anything important.
Store elsewhere. If an item should logically be stored in another room of your house it belongs in this category.
Sell. Set aside any unwanted items that are in good enough condition to sell.
Donate. This is for items that you prefer to donate to charity. These items should be in decent and workable condition.
Discard. Items that are broken or unsalvageable should go in this pile.
To continue learning how to make a plan of action for cleaning and organizing your garage this spring, be sure to check back with our Raleigh garage door specialists soon! In the meantime, contact Hanson Overhead to schedule a maintenance check!

Getting Your Garage Doors Ready for Summer, Continued!

In our last post our Raleigh garage door repair specialist began talking about getting your garage doors ready for summer! Homeowners tend to use their garage doors a lot more in the summertime.  Whether it’s because you use your garage to store your lawn mower and other lawn tools or just because you tend to drive more as you head out and about in the nice weather, you might see an increase in the number of times you open the door each day.

Raleigh Garage Door Repair: Check Your Garage Door Opener and Emergency Release!

If you tend to use your garage doors more often in summer, now is a good time to check them to make sure they’re ready for more frequent use. Some easy garage door checks are described below. You may want to call in a professional garage door repair specialist to check the door, but most are easy enough for the average DIY-er!
Check the Garage Door Opener
Check the garage door opener operation.  Simply opening and closing your garage door should tell you if there are problems.
Common problems are:

  1. Broken or loose drive belt or chain
  2. Dirty drive mechanism
  3. Loose drive mechanism where it connects to the wall above the springs
  4. Blown fuse
  5. Weak backup battery

Raleigh Garage Door Repair | Check the Emergency Release Device
While we will spend more time on garage door safety next month during Garage Door Safety Month, there are a few things we’d like to go over now.
The drive mechanism of the garage door opener will have a lanyard with a handle hanging from it. Its purpose is to prevent entrapment by disconnecting the garage-door opener from the garage door. With the garage door fully closed pull this lanyard to disconnect it. You should then be able to open the garage door manually. Reconnect the emergency release. If everything works properly, your garage doors are fine. If not, contact Hanson Overhead, Raleigh garage door repair company!
For more information on how to make sure your garage doors are ready for summer use, check back with us in our next post! Our Raleigh garage door repair experts will have a few more tips for you!

Cleaning and Oragnizing Your Garage For Summer

Raleigh Garage Door Repair: Cleaning Your Garage For Summer!

Welcome back! In our last post, our Raleigh garage door repair specialists began talking about spring cleaning your garage and getting it organized for summer! Chances are, you have tons of winter items stored in your garage that should be put away until next winter.
It’s also important to clean out any items that may be blocking your garage doors or garage door opener. While you’re checking for interferences, also be sure to take note of any repairs that may need to be done to your garage doors, springs, or other components. Contact your local Raleigh garage door repair specialist for help fixing these issues. Now is also a great time to call and schedule a maintenance check as well!
It’s time to get the summer gear out. You’ll probably have a great deal of fun summer activities planned and it’s always nice having things on hand when you need them. Go ahead and break out the following items and clean them up:

  • Bicycles
  • Golf clubs
  • Tennis rackets
  • Hiking and camping equipment
  • Car washing kit
  • Lawn mowers
  • Clippers
  • Trimmers
  • Other landscaping tools and materials

Find a good place to store these items away from your Raleigh garage doors and garage door opener. It’s important to keep the garage doors, opener, and other components free and clear of anything that could block the opener or garage door components, or get in the way of opening and closing the garage doors.
Now might be a great time to consider investing in a storage system. Many of your garage door servicers handle such things.
According to precisiongarage.com, “If your garage is climate controlled, you need to reset the thermostat for cooling and the temperatures to what you prefer during the summer. Clean the air vents and change filters. Also, check weather stripping around the garage door so you are not cooling any more of the outdoors than necessary. It could save you a significant amount of money on your electric bill.”
It’s likely there are several other things you may want to do to get your garage in tip-top shape for summer. Keep in mind though, the most important part of cleaning and organizing your garage is to help benefit your garage doors and to be sure that you don’t need any garage door repair. Tips for Painting Your Garage Door!

Raleigh Garage Door Repair: Tips to Help You Paint Your Garage Doors!

Welcome back! In our last post, our Raleigh garage door repair experts began offering tips on painting your garage door and why it’s important to paint them in the spring. Harsh weather conditions can be terrible for newly painted doors. That’s why it’s best to wait until early spring or fall. Hanson Overhead thinks that early spring is the best time to get your garage doors painted and ready so that they’ll compliment your beautifully landscaped lawn and enhance your curb appeal for summer! What better way to wow your neighbors than with a gorgeous, freshly painted garage door?!
Raleigh Garage Door Repair | Tips for Painting Garage Doors
Once the prep work is complete and your Raleigh garage doors are dry, it’s time to put down the drop cloths and tape off the sides of your garage and bottom of the driveway. Start with your primer, if you choose to use one. Do take in to consideration that if you are thinking of drastically changing the color of your garage door from a dark color to a light color (from brown to white or black to gray) you might have to use a primer to cover the darker color up so that you won’t have to use more paint than necessary.
Once the primer has dried, start using your latex paint and paint the garage doors in layers with you roller or large brush. Make sure your layers are thin and well spread. If not, the paint might look streaky or the paint might run. Use the smaller paint brush for the crevasses, panels and other hard to reach areas. Once the first layer of paint has dried completely, apply the next layer.
It’s important to leave your garage door painting to early spring or fall because extreme weather conditions could cause the paint to be hard to work with. It’s never good to pain in the rain, hot weather or cold weather.
If you’re considering painting your garage doors this spring and would like to schedule a maintenance check or have repairs made to your doors before extreme heat hits this summer, be sure to contact Hanson Overhead, the #1 Raleigh Garage Door Repair Company in the area! We will come out and make sure your Raleigh garage doors weathered the winter and are safe for summer!
