Tips for Choosing the Right Garage Door Material!

Tips for Choosing the Right Raleigh Garage Doors!

Welcome back! Over the course of the last few posts, our Raleigh garage door experts have taken you into a detailed look at garage doors! From how to purchase them to what material door you should choose, we are covering every inch of the details! We are going to continue offering tips on how to choose the right material. Last post we talked about steel doors and today, we are moving on to wooden garage doors!
Wooden Raleigh Garage Doors
Wooden garage doors are gorgeous, eye-catching, and affordable. They’re also easy to build, should you want to try a DIY approach. Wood is usually chosen because of its natural appearance and the fact that it can be easily painted and repainted, time and time again. It’s great for those homeowners that want to change up their curb appeal with an inexpensive coat of paint.
The downside: Wood expands and contracts as it ages. The possibility for cracking and warping is large. In addition, the maintenance of re-staining or painting should happen at least every two years. If you’re looking for a door that is durable but easy to maintain, wood might not be for you.
Some of the more popular wood types for your Raleigh garage doors include:

  • Redwood (Most expensive)
  • Cedar – Beautiful, little to no maintenance, can break easily due to simple expansions and contractions from extreme weather.
  • Plywood (Least expensive) – Versatile, lightweight and easy to size. One of the most popular types of wood due to the fact that it’s inexpensive and durable.
  • Mahogany – Another expensive choice, but it is often used for its extremely solid and durable hardwood.
  • Douglas-Fir – A soft wood that is used mainly for its durability and appearance.

Remember, if you’re in a milder climate, like the Raleigh NC area, most woods should be OK to choose, as far as expansions and contractions go, but it’s a good idea to talk with your Raleigh garage door repair company, Hanson Overhead, before making any serious decisions.

A New Garage Door Can Improve the Value of Your Home

A New Raleigh Garage Door Can Improve the Value of Your Home

In an interview with ABC News, Dave Seymour, property improvement expert and star of A&E’s hit Flipping Boston, argues that a functioning and appealing new garage door can yield a 400%-1000% return of investment. A new Raleigh garage door is a solid way to increase the value of your home.
A recent survey of 300 realtors found that a new garage door can increase the value of your home by up to 4%. New garage doors happen to be one of the few home improvements that sees a complete return on investment. According to Remodeling Magazine’s annual report on national trends, “A strong return of investment of a home improvement is just above 60%. Installing a new garage door has a much higher return of investment and is one of the top ways to increase the value of your home. For anyone worried about the resale value of a home, it is not a matter of if to install a new garage door, but a matter of when or which garage door to select.”
In addition to our Raleigh garage door repair experts, there are many other experts that have the same thing to say about investing in new garage doors to raise your home value and add curb appeal.
When selecting a new Raleigh garage door, there are multiple things to consider. Home improvement expert Bob Vila argues that when selecting the correct door, you want to start with what you already have: your home. The garage door, color and style, should be selected to match the style of your home. You can use architectural details such as windows or material to seamlessly match a garage door to your home. When selecting a color, you can opt to have the garage door blend in with the palate of your home by selecting more neutral colors such as tan or white, or you can have your garage door add a pop of color to your home by selecting an accent color, such as hunter green. As long as you pick a new garage door that is appropriate for your home, you are sure to increase the value of your home.
A new Raleigh garage door might be just the boost you need to get your home’s exterior in tip-top shape. Wouldn’t it be nice to be the talk of the neighborhood (in a good way, of course!?) If you’re ready to wow your neighbors and guests with fantastic curb appeal, all while increasing the value of your home, contact our Raleigh garage door company, Hanson Overhead! We are here to help you achieve the look you want with our quality, stylish garage doors!
