Home Safety Tips

Making sure your home is a safe place to live in is an important part of being a homeowner. There are many hazards that can cause fires, without you even realizing they are a problem. Below, you’ll find a few tips, according to nsc.org that can help you eliminate many of the fire hazards that are in and around your home.
In the Kitchen

  • Do not wear loose clothing while cooking.
  • Keep an eye on appliances when in use.
  • Make sure appliances are turned off and unplugged when not in use.
  • When using pots and pans, use the rear burners and turn the handles inwards.

Fireplaces

  • Cover your fireplace with a screen.
  • Have your chimney cleaned professionally once a year.
  • Keep the fireplace clean.
  • Only burn wood. Papers and other materials can escape while burning and ignite something nearby.
  • The fire should be completely extinguished before leaving the room.

In the Home

  • Annual inspection of furnace or heating system.
  • Candles should be out of reach of children and pets, curtains and furniture. Never leave candles unattended.
  • Check electrical appliances for loose or frayed cords. Do not place wires under rugs.
  • Check for outlets overloaded with plugs; including TV, computer, stereo, and printer.
  • Make sure electrical blankets are unplugged when not in use. Check for frayed or loose cords and any odd smell. If a problem is detected, replace.
  • If any appliances spark, smell unusual or overheat, replace or get repaired by a professional.
  • Install GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) outlets in your home; especially near sources of water like your bathroom, kitchen, laundry room and possibly the garage.
  • Lamps and nightlights should not touch any fabrics (bedspreads, drapes).
  • Supervise children around the stove and microwave.
  • Use the correct bulb wattage for home light fixtures.

Space Heaters

  • Unplug when not in use.
  • Placed away from beds.
  • Newspapers, magazines, and any fabrics, including curtains, sheets, tablecloths, are not within 3 feet of a space heater.
  • Keep out of walking paths.
  • Keep away from garage door openers and other electrical outlets in the gararage.
  • Keep away from children and pets.

We hope these tips will help you with any and all safety concerns in and around your home throughout the year. For more tips on home safety, be sure to visit back with us again, in the future!

Garage Remodeling Tips

Welcome back! In our last post, our Raleigh garage door repair team began a discussion that is hopefully going to help you update your current garage! Below, we refer back to a few questions that you should ask yourself before starting the overall process. The goal is to plan and design your entire garage remodel, before starting!

Garage Remodel | Raleigh Garage Door Repair

  • Should we insulate the garage or garage doors?
  • Do the garage doors need painting?
  • Do the walls or ceiling need painting?
  • Should we add or change garage lighting?
  • Should we add or replace stairs?
  • Should we get a new garage door opener?
  • Should we replace our Raleigh garage doors?
  • What is the new color scheme for the garage door, walls, ceiling, and trim?
  • Will we add or replace utility sinks?
  • Will we be adding or changing any electrical outlets?

With any major remodeling project, planning is key. In addition to designing your project, planning beforehand also helps with time management and budgeting.  Once you’ve answered all these questions, you can proceed with the renovation as follows:

  • Get your overall design and plan together.
  • Complete electrical and plumbing work .
  • Complete lighting additions or changes.
  • Complete any insulation additions or heating and cooling changes.
  • Update Raleigh garage doors and garage door openers.
  • Update or add windows.
  • Complete all wall and ceiling work.

Spring Clean in and Around Your Garage!

The first day of spring is right around the corner and the weather seems to be getting a bit warmer!! With spring weather comes lots of work around the house. Our Cary garage door repair team knows you will be cleaning, organizing, and doing other household chores that will have you working the days away for the next couple of months!

Cary Garage Door Repair: Spring Clean Your Garage!

Spring cleaning and organizing is a great time to get your garage in order, as well! It’s important to clean out the garage and do a maintenance check on your garage doors to ensure that everything is working properly. Below, our garage door repair experts have compiled a list of things to do during spring that will help you get your garage in tip-top shape for summer!
Outside Work
If you have plants or shrubbery outside your garage, it’s important to get them groomed. Remove dead branches and twigs, and also be sure to get any overgrowth out of the way of your garage doors. Prep your flower beds and make a list of preventive maintenance around the garage, as well as a list of things that must be repaired.
Clean the Gutters
Fall leaves, winter winds, and snow tend to do a number on clogging your gutters. Be sure that you get them cleaned out before April showers hit. Otherwise, the rain water will have nowhere to go and could cause the gutters to pull away from their hangers and block your garage doors or other entrances to your home.
Even worse, imagine using your automatic opener to open the garage doors while backing up, and running into a gutter that has fallen down through the night. That is not a great way to start the day.  Checking the gutters for blockages is one of the most important springtime projects!
For more tips on spring cleaning and organizing in and around your garage, be sure to check back with us on our next post! We will have a few final tips.
Also, now is a great time to go ahead and schedule a maintenance check with your favorite Cary garage door repair specialists at Hanson Overhead Garage! For more information about our services, contact us!
