Get the Outside of Your Home and Garage Ready for Summer!

Are you ready to get the outside of your home and garage ready for summer? Winter can cause debris and grime buildup that should be removed before summer. Below, our Raleigh garage door repair experts offer a few tips to help get things in shape!

Cleaning Tips | Raleigh Garage Door Repair

Outside Work – If you have plants or shrubbery outside your garage, it’s important to get them groomed. Remove dead branches and twigs, and also be sure to get any overgrowth out of the way of your garage doors. Prep your flower beds and make a list of preventive maintenance around the garage, as well as a list of things that must be repaired.
Outdoor Furniture – Many people store their outdoor furniture inside the garage during winter. Spring cleaning and organizing the garage can help you get motivated to take the furniture back outside. It’ll also motivate you to clean the furniture, as well!
Cleaning the Drive and Walkways – When the snow is falling during the winter it often looks clean, however the salt and sand that is used to keep us from slipping on the driveways and walkways is not clean. Cleaning the drive and walkways off to remove the sand is a good idea. The sand can get stuck in your garage door track during spring winds and can cause real issues with opening and closing the door! Cleaning them also gives you a chance to see if there is any damage to the walkways that needs to be repaired before additional damage occurs.
Clean the Gutters – Fall leaves, winter winds, and snow tend to do a number on clogging your gutters. Be sure that you get them cleaned out before April showers hit. Otherwise, the rainwater will have nowhere to go and could cause the gutters to pull away from their hangers and block your garage doors or other entrances to your home. Even worse, imagine using your automatic opener to open the garage doors while backing up, and running into a gutter that has fallen down through the night. That is not a great way to start the day.  Checking the gutters for blockages is one of the most important springtime projects!
Besides cleaning the gutters, cleaning the walkways and other spring projects there is always a need for oiling hinges and locks to remove squeaking noises from your Raleigh garage door.  The winter weather has a way of causing grime and buildup in your garage door components. You could even use the oil on the external doors of your home as well!

Easy Inspection for Garage Doors

It’s time to take a weekend day this spring and check your Raleigh garage doors to make sure they’re working properly! With next month being garage door safety month, we will be reporting on many things you can do to keep your garage doors safe and maintained! Below, you’ll find a quick inspection you can do now, in order to make sure your doors are safe and working properly!

Inspect Your Raleigh Garage Doors!

Check your Raleigh garage door’s springs to make sure they are not broken or relaxed. If they are, call Hanson Overhead immediately. Don’t try to repair them alone. This job can be difficult and dangerous.
Next, check the cables that connect the springs to the garage door for fraying and loose fasteners. If you find anything suspicious about the springs or their cables also call a professional. Due to the high tension of the springs, it is too dangerous of a repair for anyone but our garage door repair specialists.
Check for loose panel-hinge screws and tighten. Check for obstructions in the rails. Check for damaged rollers. It might be best to have a professional replace any damaged rollers or hinges. If you decide to do it yourself, replace them one at a time and do not attempt replacing the bottom panel rollers as the spring cables are usually fastened to them.
As a final check, open and close your Raleigh garage doors a couple of times. If it operates smoothly with no unusual noise or effort, you are good to go.
Getting your garage door ready for summer is an important part of your spring cleaning and organizing! Don’t make the mistake of letting your garage doors go without care.   You could end up with a worse problem, possibly resulting in the need for a new garage door installation.

Spring Clean Your Garage!

Spring cleaning your garage is a great project to tackle now, as temperatures are finally warming up! Though this will be a big job, getting your garage in shape for the summer will be beneficial for many reasons! Hopefully this won’t be too big of a job. Make a goal to get it all done over the course of one weekend in the next couple of weeks. Cooperation from your family members will be a big help so get them involved! Also, it’s important to have a plan of action before you start.

Spring Clean Your Garage | Raleigh Garage Door

First off, get a few large boxes that will contain things you’re going to keep, store, sell, donate and discard. As you clean, fill each box with the appropriate items:

  • Keep. This box is for items that you definitely want to keep in the garage. Make sure the items are needed and fit well in the garage without blocking anything important.
  • Store. If an item should logically be stored in another room of your house it belongs in this box.
  • Sell. Set aside any unwanted items that are in good enough condition to sell.
  • Donate. This is for items that you prefer to donate to charity. These items should be in decent and workable condition.
  • Discard. Items that are broken or unsalvageable should go in this pile.

Now, it’s time to get the summer gear out. You’ll probably have a great deal of fun summer activities planned. It’s always nice having things on hand when you need them. Go ahead and break out the following items and clean them up:

  • Bicycles
  • Golf clubs
  • Tennis rackets
  • Hiking and camping equipment
  • Car washing kit
  • Lawn mowers
  • Clippers
  • Trimmers
  • Other landscaping tools and materials

Also spring clean the following, while you’re at it:

  • flooring – sweep and mop
  • walls – scrub away black marks and dirt
  • windows – dust window sills, windows and then clean windows

According to precisiongarage.com, “If your garage is climate controlled, you need to reset the thermostat for cooling and the temperatures to what you prefer during the summer. Clean the air vents and change filters. Also, check weather stripping around the garage door so you are not cooling any more of the outdoors than necessary. It could save you a significant amount of money on your electric bill.”
If you’re interested in talking with our garage door experts about getting a new Raleigh garage door installed, be sure to contact Hanson Overhead, soon! You’ll be surprised by how much better a new garage door will insulate your entire home, saving you money and energy this summer!

Part 2: Planning and Designing a Garage Addition

garage door repair Raleigh NCWelcome back to our blog series, Adding a Garage to Your Existing Home! We are back with more information that can help you get on your way to having the garage you’ve always dreamed of having! Today, we are going to focus on the planning and design phase of a garage addition!

Planning and Designing | Garage Door Repair Raleigh NC

It’s important to make sure that your garage addition is planned and designed with the overall look in mind. Making sure your garage looks good with the rest of your existing home is a key part of planning. Many times, garages that are added after a home is built tend to look like they’re not meant to be there. Referred to as “snout houses”,  these homes have garage additions that dwarf the front of the home. It often looks as if the home was an afterthought.
Those that need a larger garage can do a few things to offset the look of it during the planning and designing stage. Making sure the front of the garage is set farther back than the entrance area of the home is a great way  to minimize the look of a larger garage.
In addition, if your property allows it, design the garage to have the garage doors face the side or back of your home. In this case, the garage’s roof can match the style of your existing roof.
Most garages today are a minimum of 14 feet by 20 feet, but, it’s standard to have a garage that’s at least 20 feet by 24 feet, as you’ll have more room for storage or a work space, in addition to vehicle storage.
Once you’ve decided on the size of your new garage, planning for the driveway is next. Modern driveways are, for one car, at least 10 feet wide and sometimes as wide as 14 feet when feasible, to ensure that the vehicle isn’t too close to fences or retaining walls as it drives up or opens a vehicle door. For two cars, the driveway is often between 20 and 24 feet. One and two car driveways are usually 20 feet long, depending on the room you have between your home and the street.
The style of your garage should be one that works well with your existing home’s style. You’ll be able to be more creative with the garage doors, but sticking with the overall style of your home will help your garage blend well without looking like an afterthought. If your home is brick, your garage addition should be, as well.
