More Tips for Choosing the Right Garage Door for Your Home

Welcome back! In our previous post, we talked about the importance of choosing the right garage door style for your home. The exterior of your home can easily get neglected. Our focus for making the interior of our homes spotless and trendy far outweighs the attention given to the exterior of our home. Garage doors are a great way to ensure that the exterior of your home looks great at all times. Below are a few more tips for choosing the right garage door style for your Raleigh home:

Garage doors should coordinate with the architecture of your home.

After you have chosen the type of material you’d like for your door it’s time to consider the aesthetics you’d like your garage to have. Garage doors have come a long way from the days of plain doors. They no longer have to be just a solid field of color. Today you can get doors that have windows and other accents that make them unique. You can find doors that complement the architectural style of your home. From traditional carriage doors to double-sided contemporary selections; there is no limit to your options!

Unexpected curb appeal

To choose the right garage door for your home’s exterior often requires you to do a little observation session. Stand back at the edge of your yard or even across the street and review your home as a whole. What is absent? Is your garage completely noticeable from the street? Is the garage façade hidden behind a tree? Do you live in a neighborhood where most of the homes have the same motif?

Answering these questions while observing your home’s exterior from afar can help you choose the right garage door for your home. Your curb appeal depends on the look of your entire home not just the flowers and mailbox. If your garage is noticeable from the street, it’s a good idea to make sure the garage doors work to enhance your curb appeal!

Different garage doors; different maintenance requirements.

As we’ve stated before, garage door maintenance is important.  How much maintenance your door requires will vary depending on the type of door you choose. It’s impossible to choose a garage door style that never needs any type of maintenance. Your garage door should be serviced by a garage door professional every few years to ensure the springs, mechanical parts, garage door opener and overall integrity of the door are still sound.

While you may choose a garage door that will require minimal maintenance keep in mind that even those that are easier to maintain still need expert maintenance checks by Hanson Overhead Garage Door Service of Raleigh.

Remember, your garage doors should reflect your lifestyle just like your home. Choosing the right garage door will help your house look great and make you feel great when you come home! Your home is something to be proud of. Let Hanson Overhead Garage Door Service help you make your home one you can enjoy both inside and out!

What is the Best Garage Door Style for My Home?

Whether you want it to or not, the exterior of your home makes the first impression. Those visiting your home, driving by, or even walking by get a look first at the exterior. This forms their first impression of your home. Most of the time, the interior of our homes get the bulk of our attention. We decorate the inside of our homes and display our best furniture and other elements of a home just as you walk in the door. Nothing, inside the home gets neglected. Home improvements to the interior are always done in a timely manner. We can’t say the same for the exterior of our homes, however.

A particular area of your Raleigh home’s exterior that gets neglected, almost always, is your garage door. Garage doors tend to be the forgotten toys after Christmas. When they’re new, we pay them loads of attention. As we grow tired of them, they get neglected.

We’ve previously talked about the importance of getting a new garage door for enhancing your home’s curb appeal, as well as how to choose the best garage door style for your home. Today, for those of you in the process of selecting a new garage door, here are few tips that will help you choose the best garage door style for your home.

Choose a material that works with the exterior of your home.

Most people think of garage doors only as functional necessities. It’s easy to think of your garage door as only a functional, utilitarian door that offers shelter and security for your vehicles and storage, but it also needs to work well with the rest of your home’s exterior. Having a garage door that looks aesthetically pleasing is important. You should love your garage door just as much as you love your wood floors or ceramic tile inside your home. Yes, they’re functional and necessary, but they’re also beautiful and a part of your home’s overall motif. Really think about what type of garage door will look best with the exterior of your home. Choose a style that fits together, perfectly!

Wooden garage doors are gorgeous and intriguing.

Wood works well in any aspect of your home; flooring, siding, furniture – virtually everything! Wood is loved by all.  If you have a rustic home exterior or craftsman style home a wooden door might be best for your garage. The sleek lines of wood can also work well for a modern or contemporary home exterior.  Wood is more expensive, but totally worth the cost if it complements your home’s exterior better than any other material.

Metal doors for an older home.

Most of the time, older homes are very traditional looking. There isn’t much you can do to update their appearance without going into major construction. You can however, choose a metal door for the garage. Steel is a good choice because it can be painted in a variety of colors. Instead of going into major reconstruction mode to modernize the exterior of your home opt for a metal garage door. You can then paint the doors a trendy red, to match the front door. Nothing says curb appeal more than a pop of color!

Choosing the best garage door style for your Raleigh home is important. It really impacts the entire look of your home. You want to be sure that the door you choose coordinates with the overall design and theme of your home.

Hanson Overhead Garage Door Service of Raleigh can help you find the best style garage door for your home. If you’d like to speak with one of our garage door experts, be sure to contact us! You can also visit all the different types of doors we offer right online!

How Long Should a Raleigh Garage Door Opener Last?

Raleigh Garage Door Opener: How long do they last?

How long should a typical Raleigh garage door opener last? You may be asking yourself this question because your garage door operator started “acting up” or parts on the operator started failing. According to a survey done by the National Association of Home Builders, based on responses from manufacturers, trade associations, and product researchers the average life expectancy of a garage door operator is 10 years.

You might be thinking ten years isn’t a very long time. In fact, you’re right. Do keep in mind though, this is an average. There are a lot of factors that lead to the quality life of a garage door opener.  The most important factor though in determining how long an opener might last is how well the garage door works.

A poorly maintained garage door is going to shorten the life of the garage door opener faster than anything else. The springs on the garage door are engineered to do most of the lifting of the door not the operator. The garage door opener is used to put the door in motion. If the springs aren’t doing their job, the operator will work harder than it was designed to do. A poorly balanced door causes the garage door opener to wear out much faster. The parts will need replacing much sooner.
Here are two tips to help you keep your Raleigh garage door in shape. These tips will also help extend the life of your garage opener. A reminder: if you are not comfortable or unable to do adjustments to your garage door please call your favorite garage door specialists. We will provide maintenance work for you.

  1. Check The Door’s Balance: A door that is balanced properly will reduce the bulk of the strain on the garage door opener. A garage door specialist states, “You’ll need to pull the red disconnect cord on the trolley (do this while the door is in the closed position). This will release the trolley so the door can be opened and closed manually. You should be able to lift the door half way and it will stay there. If the door slams back to the floor then spring tension needs to be added and if the door flies open then the spring tension needs to be reduced.’ The springs can be very dangerous and cause injury. It’s a best to let Hanson Overhead of Raleigh do the balancing and adjusting, as needed.
  2. Grease The Door: lubrication of the moving parts on the door will make the door work smoother. Grease the hinges, rollers, springs and pulleys to ensure that they can move easily. A silicone based lubricant will work best. Anything else will get sticky and attract dirt.

Annual maintenance should be done to extend the life of your Raleigh garage door and  its opener. By showing a little attention to the door and opener you’ll get a few more years out of them. You’ll also have peace of mind, knowing that they are working properly and safely.

Raleigh Garage Repair: Why Won't My Garage Door Close?

Raleigh Garage Repair & Troubleshooting

Why won’t my garage door close? This happens to be one of the most asked questions in the garage door industry. Of course, a “stuck” garage door only seems to happens when you’re running late. Luckily, there are a few things that could be causing the problem. Be sure to check everything listed below, before calling Hanson Overhead of Raleigh, NC for Raleigh garage repair.

    Raleigh Garage Repair Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Vacation Switch or Lock-out Button.  Try pressing the button on the garage wall to see if the door closes. If it doesn’t check the lock out switch or vacation switch. Referred to differently, but exactly the same, this button will lead to is standard on almost every opener. They’re good for locking the garage doors at night or while your away on vacation. They can get pressed accidentally. It’s a good idea to check this button regularly to make sure it’s off. When it’s on, it the opener should light up. As long as the light is off, the door should open and close with the remote.
  2. Check the Door’s Sensitivity.  If you’re not comfortable with making adjustments to the opener settings feel free to call Hanson Overhead Garage Door services. We will send out a professional to check the operator. Oftentimes, trying to fix things only make it worse. We understand that!  If you are mechanically minded, get the opener manual. Try to locate sensitivity settings with the help of the manual. According to garagedoorzone.com, “Most openers have a sensitivity setting for opening the door and closing the door. Before you adjust the sensitivity disconnect the opener from the door by pulling the emergency release. Check to see how the door balances and moves. If the door is hard to open or close the problem may not be the opener. You may need to call a professional to adjust the garage door. If the door works well manually then reconnect the opener and adjust the close sensitivity. WARNING: DON’T INCREASE TOO MUCH – FOLLOW THE MANUFACTURERS RECOMMENDATIONS. If you put a 2×4 under the door & the opener doesn’t reverse you need to increase the sensitivity or someone could get injured.” Be sure to call Hanson Overhead of Raleigh, NC for the garage door adjustment. We are available 24/7, to do repairs and adjustments as needed.
  3. Check the Sensors. The sensors, also called photo-eyes, are mounted on either side of your garage doors. Most often, they are near the floor. You will find two sensors. An emitter sensor and a receiver sensor. The two sensors must be able to “see” each other at all times. If they are knocked out alignment (kids, lawn mowers, hoses, garbage cans bumping into them can knock them out of alignment) they can’t communicate with each other.  The opener will refuse to work. Anything can knock the sensors out of line; lawn mowers, hoses, kids, and even bumping into them with a garbage can, can cause them to become unaligned. A good checklist to use monthly is:
    Raleigh Garage Repair Checklist

  • Check sensors. Make sure they are aligned
  • Make sure nothing is blocking sensors. Sometimes a garbage can, broom or other object can get in its way.
  • Clean the lens on each sensor. Oftentimes, debris can interfere with the lens, causing the door to malfunction.
  • Check wires to the sensors & the one’s going to the power head – make sure they didn’t come loose
  • Check & see if sun is shining on sensors. Sometimes the sun can “blind” the sensors and cause them to think an object is blocking the opening. If this is the case the sensors may need moved further into the garage

If you’ve checked all of the above and the opener still doesn’t close the door you can pull the emergency release and close the door manually. It’s usually better to call your local garage door professionals at Hanson Overhead Garage Door Service to take a look before leaving the broken garage door.  There could be something seriously wrong with the garage door opener.  The sensors or the logic board in the opener may not be functioning properly. Raleigh Garage repair or replacement might be needed.
Remember, if you don’t feel comfortable doing any of the above Hanson Overhead of Raleigh will be more than happy to come out and take a look at your Raleigh garage. No matter the time of day or night, we will be there to help you out! Visit our website for more information on how to care for your Raleigh garage!
