Raleigh Garage Repair: Garage Door Saftey Tips!

Raleigh Garage Repair: Safety First

Garages are great for an assortment of various reasons. Just to name a few; storage, home projects, play, and work. Though garages provide a place for the reasons listed and more, they also pose safety and security challenges. Keeping your garage doors safe is important. Knowing that they’re safe ensure the safety of you and your family. In our previous post, we listed  important safety tips to apply to your garage doors. Below are a few more garage door safety tips. If you have any questions about your garage doors, or need a maintenance check, be sure to contact Hanson Overhead Garage Door Service for all your Raleigh garage repair needs.

  • Make sure the opener’s control button is out of the reach of small children.
  • Do not let children play with garage door remote controls.
  • Consult the owner’s manual and learn how to use the garage door’s emergency release feature.
  • Inspect garage doors at least once a month. Make sure to pay attention to the springs, cables, rollers and pulleys. Look for signs of wear. Do not attempt to remove, adjust or repair these parts or anything attached to them. A trained door repairman from Hanson should make modifications to parts that need repairs or adjustments.
  • Never leave the garage door partly open. Always shut it completely. If left partially open and then activated again, the door may travel down and come into contact with something in its path. Leaving the door open a bit also affects your home’s security.
  • While on vacation, unplug the garage door opener unit. You can also use a vacation lock console security switch. This switch renders a remote useless.
  • If your garage door opener does not have rolling-code technology, be sure to change the manufacturer’s typical access codes on the opener and remote control. Rolling-code technology changes the access codes each time the opener is used to prevent code grabbing. You can also invest in a newer model. Newer models are more advanced in their safety and security.
  • A new trend in home invasion is gaining access to the home by stealing the opener or car. Never leave the remote control in the car or with a parking attendant. Consider using a key chain remote and always lock the entry to the inside of your home – especially if your opener is programmed to your vehicle. It is a small inconvenience for safety and security.

Raleigh Garage Repair: Safety Tips

Hanson Overhead | Garage Door Repair Raleigh, NC

“Garage Door Safety Month” is June.  We at Hanson Overhead Garage Door Service of Raleigh and the surrounding areas would like to pass along to the public some valuable safety tips.
The Garage Door today plays a much bigger roll to the everyday family.  Today, over 70% percent of the homeowners now are entering and leaving their homes from the garage.  It plays a key role in the Homeowner’s lives as it is the largest moving object in the home going over the family themselves and their prize possessions such cars, ATV’s, boats, and pets.
Here are some important Safety Tips to follow:

  1. Do Not Allow your children or even yourselves to go under a garage door while it is moving.
  2. Check the balance of your garage door.  Release the garage door from the operator by pulling the emergency cord you can lift the door manually.  If your door is properly balanced and safe, you should be able to lift the garage door smoothly with little effort.  It should stay open at your knees, your waist, and your shoulders.  If your door is dropping in any of these areas and/or it is hard to lift manually, you need to call a respectable Garage Door Company like Hanson Overhead garage door service.
  3. Safety Reverse:  Since 1993, all automatic garage door operators must include “sensor eyes” or  sometimes called “photo eyes”.  These eyes are installed 6” from the floor on each side of the door.  If an object obstructs the laser beam between the two eyes the door should automatically reverse back up.  IMPORTANT-  (If your operator does not have sensor eyes, then it is time to buy a New Operator.)
  4. Never place your fingers between the sections of your garage door.  Your fingers can be seriously damaged to the point of amputation.  Explain the dangers to your children.
  5. Never remove, adjust or loosen the screws on the bottom bracket of the garage door.  These brackets are connected to the spring(s) by the cable and are under extreme tension.
  6. Get an Annual Safety Check-Up with a professional Garage Door Company.  You should call Hanson Overhead Garage Door service.  They are the “Garage Door Safety Experts!”
