Garage Door Safety Tips

Raleigh garage door safety is important year round, but during the month of June, it’s essential. June is garage door safety month so we hope the tips below will help you keep your garage door in tip-top shape!

Raleigh Garage Door Safety

  • Consult the owner’s manual and learn how to use the garage door’s emergency release feature.
  • Do not let children play with garage door remote controls.
  • If your garage door opener does not have rolling-code technology, be sure to change the manufacturer’s typical access codes on the opener and remote control. Rolling-code technology changes the access codes each time the opener is used to prevent code grabbing. You can also invest in a newer model. Newer models are more advanced in their safety and security.
  • Inspect garage doors at least once a month. Make sure to pay attention to the springs, cables, rollers and pulleys. Look for signs of wear. Do not attempt to remove, adjust or repair these parts or anything attached to them. A trained door repairman from Hanson should make modifications to parts that need repairs or adjustments.
  • Make sure the opener’s control button is out of the reach of small children.
  • Never leave the garage door partially open. Always shut it completely. If left partially open and then activated again, the door may travel down and come into contact with something in its path. Leaving the door open a bit also affects your home’s security.
  • Never leave the remote control in the car or with a parking attendant. Consider using a key chain remote and always lock the entry to the inside of your home – especially if your opener is programmed to your vehicle. It is a small inconvenience for safety and security.
  • While on vacation, unplug the garage door opener unit. You can also use a vacation lock console security switch. This switch renders a remote useless.

Garage Door Opener Issues

Raleigh Garage Door Opener Issues

Garage door openers are one of the most important aspects of our Raleigh garage door. It’s amazing how many times we use them, daily, but never give them a second thought. We usually spend more time maintaining our Raleigh garage door, spending money on it to ensure that it looks its best, works properly, and never offers any problems. Why not do the same thing for our garage door opener?
If you care for your garage door opener, just as you do your door, you may be able to eliminate the need for a 10 p.m. emergency call to your garage door repair guy.
Of course, remembering to have the garage door opener serviced regularly will take time and effort so that you remember to have it done. So, what happens when your garage door opener decides to take the day off and leaves you stranded outside the garage during a rainstorm?
Thankfully, there are a few things you can do, on your own, to diagnose and possibly repair the issues that your Raleigh garage door opener is having! Below, you’ll find a list of quick fixes that will hopefully help you with all your opener issues!
Plug Check
Is the power cord plugged into a working outlet? This is the most commonly overlooked issue with openers. Check the power sources to ensure they’re all working properly!
Lock
Oftentimes, garage door openers have a lock feature that may have been activated by accident. Check to make sure it’s turned off.
On and Off
Sometimes turning your opener off and then on again might help to reset the sensors. Also be sure to unplug it while it’s off.
New Batteries
Sometimes the batteries lose their charge without us even realizing it! Try replacing them even if you’re sure that’s not the problem!
Remote Issues
It’s possible your remote has become deprogrammed. Your manual will be able to help you reset it. If you have issues, you can contact our Raleigh garage door repair team for help, as well!
Beam Check
Is the beam sensor plugged in? If it’s not, you’ve found your problem!
Sensor Eyes
Sometimes, the eyes of the sensor tend to get dirty. The eyes are located in the front of the opener, near the on/off button. Use a wet cloth to dust the eyes and then check your door to see if it works. When the sensor eyes get dusty, the signal from your remote gets blocked.
Chain Check
Is the chain broken or loose? If it is, this is something you need an expert for. Contact Hanson Overhead, immediately, no matter what time it is, as we are proud to offer you 24/7 service repair!
When to Get Help
It’s possible that your Raleigh garage door opener needs professional help. In this case, there’s nothing you can do but call a repair tech. In the meantime, you should be able to operate your garage door by hand, until it’s fixed!
Pulling the red release cord will free the door so that you can open and close it manually. If you have an older door, there might not be a release cord. In this case, it can be dangerous to try and open it yourself. It’s best to wait on the repair tech to help get it open.

Noisy Garage Door?

A noisy garage door can mean tons of various issues, small or large. A noisy garage door can also be very irritating to those around it! Thankfully, there are several issues that can be fixed easily, on your own. Below, you’ll find a few Raleigh garage door repair tips from about.com that will help you easily fix your noisy garage door! If you need help at any point during your maintenance check and repair call Hanson Overhead.

Raleigh Garage Door Repair Tips

Tighten Nuts
With a socket wrench or adjustable wrench, tighten all nuts on the door and track. You want everything snug, but don’t overtighten.
Replace the rollers
It is not uncommon for old metal rollers to make a lot of noise as they roll up and down the metal track. If you can clearly identify this as the source of the noise, or if the rollers just look worn down, consider replacing them.
Standard rollers have a 2-inch roller and a 4-inch stem, but measure yours before buying replacements. Replace the rollers one at a time. The whole job shouldn’t take more than an hour.
Garage Springs
A typical five-section garage door will require a dozen rollers. Consider using nylon rather than metal rollers, as they are quieter and don’t have to be lubricated on a regular basis. They also cost more—roughly $60 for a full set of nylon rollers versus $38 for metal.
Garage doors use two different types of spring mechanisms to ease lifting and lowering. Extension springs are located above the upper tracks on both sides. Torsion springs are attached to the header directly above the closed door. If you have torsion springs, do not try to replace the rollers in the bottom bracket. Because they are always under tension, tampering with the bottom brackets could cause serious injury. This is a job for a professional only.
Replace Hinges
Over time, the hole in the hinge that houses the roller stem can become worn. Inspect each of the hinges and replace any that have a hole that is more oblong than round.
If you feel uncomfortable replacing any of the garage door components above, feel free to contact our Raleigh garage door repair team. We are here to help you with any problems you may have with your garage door. As the largest, heaviest moving component of your home, it’s understandable if you’re uncomfortable working with it. That’s why Hanson Overhead is here. No matter what the problem is, we are here to help!

Curb Appeal Tips

Are you bored with your landscaping and curb appeal now that dreary winter has set in? It’s easy to believe that the exteriors of our homes are destined to meet a temporary drab spell during the cold winter months. Thankfully, that’s not the truth at all! Our Raleigh garage door repair experts are here to help you spruce up your curb appeal this winter with projects that will only enhance the other work you do the rest of the year!

Winter Curb Appeal Tips | Raleigh Garage Door Repair

Outdoor Lighting
The best way to make a serious statement with curb appeal is with outdoor lighting. Especially in winter, outdoor lighting will brighten even the darkest of lawns by creating a nice illuminated interest. For an Eco-friendly option, add solar powered light fixtures along your walkways and garage. In addition to adding curb appeal, these lights will also provide security and safety!
Seasonal Garden
Just because winter has set it doesn’t mean that you can’t have fresh veggies all year long! While you do have to plant according to season, you can have a nice container garden or other small planter garden all year long! This is a great way to add color to any home exterior. It’s also an easy, affordable way to create your own landscaping element.
Window Boxes
There’s no better way to add curb appeal to the exterior of your home than with window boxes! Add boxes to each window facing the street for an added depth and extra color all year long! You can even add them to the windows in your garage! For even more interest, consider choosing boxes in a trendy metal like copper or iron. You can even use reclaimed wood for a more rustic look!
Planter Renewal
When fall ends, our planter beds tend to lose their luster and wilt away with colder weather. It’s important to get rid of growing weeds and dead, wilted plants before spring hits. Winter is a great time to prune old growth, add new mulch and redo or add a brick, stone or other type of border around your planter beds.
Getting a head start on all these things, this winter, while the weather is a bit mild and easy to work in is a great way to enhance the exterior of your home and garage! For more tips on easy DIY curb appeal, visit back with us soon! Our Raleigh garage door repair experts are here to help!

Exploring the Different Types of Garage Sizes

Raleigh garage door repairRaleigh Garage Door Repair: Exploring Garage Types

Welcome back! In our last post, our Raleigh garage door repair experts began discussing the different types of garage classifications. Garages have a multitude of options for homeowners looking to add one onto their current or new home. There are different types of materials garages can be built with. In addition, they can also come in a variety of shapes and sizes, as well as with or without  garage doors.
Among the different materials and styles of garages, there are also three different types of garage categories:

  • Single
  • Double
  • Tandem

Today, we are going to go over each type and how they’re different. To take a look back at our previous posts, before moving on, visit them here:

  • Choosing the Right Garage Doors

Single Garage | Raleigh Garage Door Repair
As the simplest type of garage, single garages are usually a space that accommodates one average sized car. They’re rarely big enough for a truck or large SUV. There is usually enough space for the driver and other passengers to enter and exit easily, as well as fully open all doors of the car.
Double Garage
Twice the width of a single garage, double garages allow two cars to be parked side by side comfortably. In addition, there’s enough space for all passengers to open doors, enter and exit comfortably.
Tandem Garage
A tandem garage type is not as common as a single or double type. Mainly due to the inconvenience of not being able to move both cars at once, the tandem style garage isn’t always popular. A tandem garage offers parking for two cars, end to end, rather than side by side. In addition, tandem garages usually offer only one garage door.
While the limitation of only being able to move one car at a time is inconvenient, tandem style garages can work as long as there’s a little planning involved, before moving the vehicles.
If you’re interested in talking with one of our Raleigh garage door repair specialists about the different types of garages or doors, feel free to contact us! For more information on garages and doors, visit back with our blog soon!
