Part 2: Planning and Designing a Garage Addition

garage door repair Raleigh NCWelcome back to our blog series, Adding a Garage to Your Existing Home! We are back with more information that can help you get on your way to having the garage you’ve always dreamed of having! Today, we are going to focus on the planning and design phase of a garage addition!

Planning and Designing | Garage Door Repair Raleigh NC

It’s important to make sure that your garage addition is planned and designed with the overall look in mind. Making sure your garage looks good with the rest of your existing home is a key part of planning. Many times, garages that are added after a home is built tend to look like they’re not meant to be there. Referred to as “snout houses”,  these homes have garage additions that dwarf the front of the home. It often looks as if the home was an afterthought.
Those that need a larger garage can do a few things to offset the look of it during the planning and designing stage. Making sure the front of the garage is set farther back than the entrance area of the home is a great way  to minimize the look of a larger garage.
In addition, if your property allows it, design the garage to have the garage doors face the side or back of your home. In this case, the garage’s roof can match the style of your existing roof.
Most garages today are a minimum of 14 feet by 20 feet, but, it’s standard to have a garage that’s at least 20 feet by 24 feet, as you’ll have more room for storage or a work space, in addition to vehicle storage.
Once you’ve decided on the size of your new garage, planning for the driveway is next. Modern driveways are, for one car, at least 10 feet wide and sometimes as wide as 14 feet when feasible, to ensure that the vehicle isn’t too close to fences or retaining walls as it drives up or opens a vehicle door. For two cars, the driveway is often between 20 and 24 feet. One and two car driveways are usually 20 feet long, depending on the room you have between your home and the street.
The style of your garage should be one that works well with your existing home’s style. You’ll be able to be more creative with the garage doors, but sticking with the overall style of your home will help your garage blend well without looking like an afterthought. If your home is brick, your garage addition should be, as well.

Part 1: Zoning and Coding Restrictions for a Garage Addition

raleigh garage door repairMaking the decision to add a garage to your existing home is a wonderful thing! No longer will you have to dream of the day when you’ll move to a home that has a garage. You’ll be able to plan and design the garage of your dreams, as well as stay in your current home!
Choosing to add a garage to your home is a great idea for those that don’t want to move into another home but need the extra space and want to protect their vehicles from the elements. Unfortunately, there are various steps that must take place in specific order before a garage addition becomes a reality. Our Raleigh garage door repair team is here to walk you through the first, most important step of adding a garage to your existing home.
It’s important, first thing, to make sure a garage addition is even a possibility. Is there enough room on the land you own? Do you have the space, next to your home or behind your home to add a garage? In addition, there are several zoning and coding restrictions that you must adhere to when building any type of structure.
Visit your local building department and talk with a building inspector, first thing. Find out the following:

  • Do garage additions have specific regulations?
  • Are there setback requirements for the Raleigh garage doors?
  • How close can the garage addition be to the edge of your property?
  • Does the driveway need to have a specific design?
  • Are there wall and roof height requirements?

All of these questions might be answered by an architect or Raleigh garage door repair company, but it’s best to get the information from the building inspection department in your area. That way, you’ll know exactly what to expect as you move forward with planning and designing your garage addition.

Once you learn the zoning and coding restrictions for a garage addition, you can decide whether or not your garage will be attached or detached. Your zoning and coding requirements might make that decision for you. You may only be able to build a separate structure or vice versa.
If you’re able to do as you please in the way of attached or detached, consider the benefits of both and make your decision. Attached garages cost less, generally, and also offer more convenience and benefits for those that want to use the garage as an extension of the home. A detached garage also has advantages that attached ones don’t; a workshop separated from your home, ability to add an apartment, and more!
Once you decide on an attached or detached garage addition, the planning and designing can begin! Be sure to visit back with us, next blog post, for more information regarding planning and designing your garage addition!

Series: Adding a Garage to Your Existing Home

Raleigh garage doorsGarages are an important part of homes today. They’re a place to house our vehicles, a “front door” to our homes and also a place to store belongings that need to be protected from the elements. Many people take their garage for granted but few fully realize its true worth. Those that don’t have a garage are probably more likely to understand the importance of a garage and often wish they had one. Homeowners that don’t have a garage wish they had a shield from rain as they run from their car to the front door, a space for storage, a workshop or even a place for their home office.

Garage Addition | Raleigh Garage Doors

If you’re thinking of making some home improvements or additions in the future, why not consider a garage addition? Remodeling magazine’s latest Cost vs. Value Report states that those who invest a national average of $52,382 in a two-car garage addition can expect to recoup about 65% of the cost at resale. Whether you sell your home later on or just convert the added value to a home equity line, a garage addition will be great, all around! More space for your home, a place to house your vehicles and added value to your home!
There are several things to consider before jumping in and planning for your garage addition. First, you must consider code and zoning restrictions in your area. Planning and designing comes after this first, important step.
Over the course of the next few posts, we will talk in detail about each step of Adding a Garage to Your Existing Home:

Garage Trends!

Trends | Raleigh Garage Doors

Garages today are so much more than a place to keep your vehicles out of the weather and elements. They’re designed as an extension of your home. Oftentimes, garages have storage space, hobby tables, workbenches and more. Raleigh garage doors are insulated so that spending time in your garage to work or play is comfortable temperature-wise.
One of the biggest garage trends of today is installing eye-catching, unique Raleigh garage doors to add extra curb appeal to the overall home! The upscale garage doors offered now aren’t just for the garage. They’re quickly becoming our new front door. Very few people actually use their front door to enter their home on a regular basis these days.
Garages make up around 30% of our homes. It’s only natural that we have begun to take care of our garage and Raleigh garage doors just as we do our homes. Making sure our garage doors will complement our home’s architectural style is just as important as making sure they’re working properly.
For those just building a garage for your existing home, a big trend now is constructing a garage larger than you’d ever expect to need. Going as large as possible with your new garage will offer extra storage and possibly extra living space. However, it is important to consider proportions when constructing your new garage. It should complement your home in size; not overpower it.
If you’re building a new home, the sky – or budget, rather – is the limit! You might need to rework blueprints to accommodate a larger garage than originally planned for the home.
You never know what the future holds. That’s why it’s important to have a garage that can accommodate the future! If your children will be driving in 5-10 years, consider adding a third bay for them. If your in-laws are looking to visit more often, you might want to add an upstairs apartment for them to stay in!
